What Is Advanced Leadership of Self?

It’s a structured daily discipline for creating CLARITY, refining IDENTITY, and rewiring AUTOPILOT behavior — so that the right actions happen automatically.

The majority of a person’s daily actions, up to 95%, are unconscious. Those actions determine success in every area of life — career, romantic relationship, and health. And since they are unconscious, a person is not consciously directing the very thing that is determining their outcomes. Think of the profound ramifications of that.

It’s not a motivation problem. It’s a systems problem.

Advanced Leadership of Self is the solution. A proven 12-minute daily practice that feeds the subconscious mind with precision — exactly who you are committed to being, exactly what you are committed to achieving, and exactly how you will get there. Repeated daily, the autopilot is rewired. Until the right actions happen not by effort, but by default.

This is the “HOW” of leadership of self.

That’s why it’s called advanced leadership of self. And it’s purpose is to give every person the ability to play their game of life at the full measure of their potential. Taking the right actions consistently, across every area of life, until The Exceptional Life is not an aspiration. Rather, it’s the natural result.

Because in the end, success comes down to one thing: the cumulative effect of one’s daily actions. This methodology is for the driven 2%.

Advanced Leadership of Self is the system that puts your greatest asset, your conscious mind intelligence and intellect, in control of your daily actions. Rather than leaving them on autopilot. The 12-minute daily methodology is patent pending in the name of the University of Texas at Austin.

Why It Matters

Human beings are not wired for success. We are wired for survival.

That distinction has profound consequences. A brain wired for survival defaults to fear. It is reactive rather than proactive on one’s important agenda. It resists change. And it protects what exists with procrastination. Left unaddressed, this is the operating system running most people’s lives — every single day.

But there is a second reality that makes this even more significant.

The majority of a person’s daily thoughts and actions — up to 95% — are unconscious. In the moment, automatic, and on autopilot. Happening beneath the surface. Beyond the reach of even the most intelligent, motivated, well-coached person. Which means not only are we wired for survival — we are also running on a survival-based autopilot we cannot see, don’t know how to access, and cannot change through willpower or intention alone.

And appreciate this. The idea that up to 95% of one’s daily actions are unconscious is counterintuitive — and worth understanding. A person takes an action unconsciously, and then milliseconds later becomes aware of it. Because the gap is almost imperceptible, the action feels like a conscious, intentional choice. But the sequence is actually reversed. The action came first. The awareness came after. This is why many people resist the idea that the majority of their daily actions are unconscious. They say: I am conscious of everything I do.

But awareness of an action is not the same as consciously directing it. And that distinction is everything.

But here is what makes all this particularly striking: AI-assisted research across 28 of the nation’s leading universities — Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, MIT, Kellogg, and others — reveals that they all obviously teach leadership. But none of them addresses the fact that the majority of a person’s daily actions are unconscious. And while the work they are doing is valuable, none of it touches the automatic layer of behavior that is fundamentally driving outcomes.

That is not a minor gap. It’s the missing foundational piece of leadership education itself.

The solution is not more motivation. It is not more discipline. It is a system.

“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You sink to the level of your systems.” — James Clear, Atomic Habits

Advanced Leadership of Self is that system — a structured 12-minute daily practice designed to do the one thing no other leadership program addresses: deliberately influence the unconscious thoughts and actions that are otherwise running your life on autopilot.

The Science of Leveraging Yourself

If most of your daily actions are unconscious, up to 95%, then most people are not consciously directing the very thing determining their success. The implications of that are profound — and as noted, almost no one in leadership education today is addressing it.

The science points to a solution: the subconscious mind does not respond to logic like the conscious mind does. Rather it responds only to repetition. Feed it clarity — with precision and consistency — and it begins to make the right actions happen automatically.

That is the mechanism. In this advanced leadership of self methodology, 3 elements are delivered to the subconscious mind each morning: exactly the person you are committed to being, exactly what you want to accomplish, and precisely how you are going to achieve your clearly defined goals. Twelve minutes. Every day.

Over time, this rewires your autopilot. The right actions stop requiring willpower and start happening by default. And you have a powerful force pulling you forward to your desired life, overcoming the life you have drifted into.

That is the difference between operating at 5% of your potential and operating at 100%.

The Researchers Behind the Science

Dr. Andrew Huberman

Dr. Huberman’s groundbreaking work on identity and focused self-talk provides a compelling scientific foundation for how we understand the relationship between the way we speak to ourselves and who we become. His research makes clear that the inner dialogue we engage in is not background noise — it is actively shaping our biology, our identity and therefore our behavior.

Dr. Joe Dispenza

Dr. Dispenza’s research into visualization and self-control illuminates how the mind can be deliberately trained to override deeply ingrained patterns and create new ones. His work bridges neuroscience and practical application in ways that are directly relevant to the Advanced Leadership of Self methodology.

Dr. James Doty

Dr. Doty’s work on manifestation moves the conversation beyond pop psychology and into serious scientific inquiry. His research examines how intention, attention, and mindset interact to produce real, measurable outcomes in people’s lives.

The Neurological Mechanism

At the neurological level, the 12-minute daily practice directly engages the reticular activating system — the brain’s filter for what it pays attention to and what it acts on. It brings into your consciousness what you tell it is important.

When you understand the mechanism and intentionally influence it 12 minutes a day, the results are not surprising.

They are inevitable.

The Advanced Leadership of Self System

Here is what most high-achieving people never figure out. Intelligence is not the problem. Ambition is not the problem. The problem is more fundamental than that. Your daily actions determine your success in each area of your life. But most of your daily actions, up to 95%, are unconscious. They are reactionary, in the moment, and on autopilot. And since they are unconscious, they are completely beyond the reach of your greatest asset — your intelligence and intellect. Your intellect cannot lead what it cannot see.

This is why many driven people plateau, puzzled as to why their results don’t meet their potential. It’s not because they lack capability. It’s because their intellectual capability is not in control of their daily actions.

The Advanced Leadership of Self System changes that.

The Life GPS Template

Each morning, in 12 minutes, you deliberately direct your own mind — feeding the subconscious with a precise articulation of exactly WHO you are committed to being, exactly WHAT you want to accomplish, and exactly HOW you are going to get there. Repeated daily, the autopilot is rewired. Within 21 days, the right actions begin happening automatically. Consistently, rather than sporadically.

The instrument that makes this possible is the Life GPS Template. Built around the five areas that determine the quality of a life: yourself, your health, your romantic relationship, your spirituality, and your career. Answer approximately 50 questions, press a button, and in ten seconds an AI algorithm generates a Life GPS Template customized to your unique life.

Not a generic framework — a precise reflection of the “Ideal You” and exactly where you are going.

The Book Defining the Discipline

Publishing Q4 2026

Every discipline has a defining text. The book that codifies the methodology, establishes the scientific foundation, and gives anyone — anywhere in the world — the tools to apply it to their own life.

Advanced Leadership of Self: The Science of Leveraging Yourself is that book. It’s the HOW of self-mastery and leadership of self.

The Science Covered in the Book

The Advanced Leadership of Self methodology is grounded in some of the most compelling neuroscience of our time. Dr. Andrew Huberman of Stanford — whose work on focused self-talk and identity has reached millions — provides a core pillar of the scientific foundation. So does the work of Dr. James Doty of Harvard on manifestation, and Dr. Joe Dispenza on self-talk and visualization.

Who the Book Is For: The Driven 2%

This book is written for anyone who cannot walk into a University of Texas classroom but is driven to apply the full Advanced Leadership of Self methodology to their own life. It provides the complete system — not an introduction, not a summary, but the full methodology explained from the ground up.

Inside you will find the science behind why up to 95% of daily behavior is unconscious, and the profound implications of that for every area of your life. As well as the science behind rewiring your autopilot. The Life GPS Template is fully explained and you are given access to it. The book also covers five self-mastery skills proven be critical for success. The book explains how they are embedded in the Life GPS Template, and provides the forms, frameworks and template to implement them immediately.

Also inside is the quarterly goal system for career, health, and romantic relationship. Along with the advanced LOS app to track weekly your performance on the key behaviors associated with your goals.

AI — The Component That Takes This to the Next Level

AI is an integral part of the Advanced Leadership of Self system. It shows up in two ways. First, an AI algorithm customizes the Life GPS Template to each person’s unique life in seconds. Secondly, AI is incorporated in one of the five self-mastery skills taught in the methodology — setting aside time to deep think two times a week. Every person’s thinking is constrained by the four walls of their own mind — limited by current knowledge and biases. The book teaches you how to break through that constraint by using AI in your twice-weekly deep thinking sessions through back-and-forth verbal conversations. Not typing. Talking. The way you would think out loud with the sharpest, most knowledgeable mind in the room — one with no agenda and no limit to what it knows.

The result is a quality of thinking and clarity that independent thought alone simply cannot reach.

Pioneering the Field of Advanced Leadership of Self: The University of Texas at Austin

The methodology behind Advanced Leadership of Self is actively taught at one of the nation’s premier research universities, reaching both graduate and undergraduate students.

What began in a university classroom has become something larger — an emerging discipline dedicated to understanding and developing one of the most important dimensions of human performance: the ability to intentionally lead oneself. A discipline with structure, evidence, and reach.

A Dedicated Research Center

The Center for Advanced Leadership of Self at the University of Texas at Austin is the institutional home for this work — driving research, measuring outcomes, and establishing the academic credibility that separates a discipline from a philosophy. The Center is the engine behind everything that follows.

The methodology is patent pending in the name of the University of Texas at Austin — ensuring that the integrity and ownership of this work is protected as the discipline grows.

Courses

At the MBA level, Advanced Leadership of Self: The Science of Leveraging Yourself gives MBA students a rigorous framework for self-mastery that takes 12 minutes a day. They re-create themselves with intention. So they are re-created from the inside out, rather than the outside in. So they live a life of immense intention and clarity. And have a unique control over their daily actions, up to 95% of which, are unconscious.

They are also taught five high-performance skills that have been proven to be foundational in creating The Exceptional Life in the real world. At the undergraduate level, Design Your Exceptional Life brings the same foundational principles to students earlier in their journey, equipping them with tools most people never encounter in a lifetime.

Measurable results are a key component of both courses. Students are rigorously tracked from where they were at the start of the semester to where they are at the end. Academia doesn’t value claims — it values documented results. This is done through the leadership of self Index questionnaire.

Further, the founder of the advanced leadership of self methodology, John Mitchell, is also the mental coach for the 18 head coaches at the University of Texas. UT is  the biggest brand in college sports based on revenue and has been the most successful athletic program in the country, having won the Directors Cup five of the last six years.

That the methodology is trusted at the highest level of performance at UT is meaningful context for any institution evaluating whether to bring it to their own programs.

Workshops

Two workshops extend this work beyond the classroom.

  1. The $5 Million Secret: The Science of Leveraging Yourself offers a compelling overview of the Advanced Leadership of Self methodology — an introduction to a way of thinking that fundamentally changes how people relate to their own potential.

  2. THINKING — Deep Thinking Two Times a Week is the practical entry point into the Advanced Leadership of Self methodology. At its core are three transformative ideas: 1>that there are two versions of you operating at all times — the Observer You and the Doer You; 2>that you are simultaneously the problem and the solution; 3> that deep thinking, using a simple three-step process — practiced for just 30 minutes, twice a week — is where lasting change begins. It’s a structured way to tune into reality, see clearly what’s working and what isn’t, and provides a consistent venue for stimulating your creativity in a way that compounds over time.

More Universities. More Classrooms. And Corporate Training.

The goal is to see this methodology taught broadly across higher education as a core component of what it means to prepare people for life. A methodology is only as scalable as the people who can teach it well. A certification program is in development to train and credential educators, coaches, and facilitators — ensuring that as the discipline grows, the integrity of the work grows with it. Certification will extend to corporate trainers as well. Because leadership of others ultimately begins with leadership of self.

The Frontier: K–12 Education

Perhaps the most exciting frontier is also the earliest one. The Center for Advanced Leadership of Self sees that the process of proactively leading oneself needs to begin much sooner than college — typically at age ten. This is best achieved through a joint venture with an innovative K–12 learning organization. An example of such an organization is Alpha Schools — one of the nation’s most innovative K–12 learning platforms.

Annual Worldwide Summit — Hosted by the University of Texas

In November 2027, the University of Texas at Austin will host the first worldwide Advanced Leadership of Self Summit — the annual gathering of the academics, researchers, educators, corporate leaders, and practitioners who are building this discipline together. The room is being built. Be in it.
