The Story Behind the Methodology

When John Mitchell turned 50, he wasn’t as successful as he thought he should be.

He had started his career as a CPA, became an entrepreneur at 30, and built seven different businesses across two decades. By most measures, he was doing well — earning $200,000 to $300,000 a year. But he had two goals in life that kept eluding him: financial freedom and finding the right partner. At 50, he was falling short on both.

He was puzzled. He was working hard. He was intelligent. He had experience. And yet something wasn’t working.

His results weren’t matching his intelligence and his potential.

Then, about three months after turning 50, a single idea came to him.

Find the top book in the world on success — and apply it literally, word for word, to his life.

He jumped out of bed and started researching immediately. What he found surprised him. One book stood apart from everything else — read by over 150 million people, outselling the next best book on success by a factor of ten. That book was Think and Grow Rich.

He bought it the next day.

But then he found the problem.

The book explicitly states there is a secret for creating success — but the author deliberately reveals only half of it. The reader is left to figure out the rest.

He was disappointed. He spent a couple of weeks frustrated. Then he made a fateful decision: figure out the full secret, and find a practical way to apply it.

Over the next two months, he immersed himself completely. He read the book approximately 20 times. Night and day. And what emerged was clarity — the full secret, and a 12-minute daily technique to apply it.

What happened next changed everything.

In a new company he started in the reverse mortgage industry, his income began doubling. Then doubling again. Then again. Within four years, he was netting over  million a year — 25 times what he had earned in any of the previous 20 years.

But what struck him most was not the money. It was something harder to name.

He could feel that he was playing the game of life at a higher level. He had a degree of control over himself — over his thoughts, his focus, his daily actions — that he had never experienced before. And he became fascinated by a single question: how was it possible that two scientific principles, consistently applied, could so profoundly change a person’s outcomes?

Once he had achieved the financial freedom he had always wanted, he sold his company. His new mission was to share what he had discovered.

About three months later, he met the former Chancellor and President of the University of Texas, Dr. Bill Cunningham. John told Bill his story. The response was immediate: you need to teach this at UT — and let’s teach it together.

That conversation led to everything that followed. Teaching the 12-minute-a-day methodology to the athletic director. Becoming the mental coach for 18 head coaches in the UT athletic department. And ultimately, developing and teaching Advanced Leadership of Self: The Science of Leveraging Yourself to MBA students at one of the nation’s premier research universities.

The Center for Advanced Leadership of Self is the institutional expression of what began that night — when one person decided to stop wondering why things weren’t working, and committed to figuring out why they could.

What John Mitchell Does Today

John Mitchell is the founder of the Center for Advanced Leadership of Self at the University of Texas at Austin — the institutional home of an emerging academic discipline dedicated to understanding and developing the most important dimension of human performance: the ability to intentionally lead oneself.

He teaches Advanced Leadership of Self at the MBA level at UT, where students consistently demonstrate dramatic, measurable improvements in self-worth, control over daily actions, elimination of the negative inner voice, and mastery of self — documented by the Leadership of Self Index before and after every semester.

He also serves as the mental performance coach for 18 head coaches in the UT athletic department. Bringing the Advanced Leadership of Self methodology to the biggest brand in college sports. The University of Texas takes in more money than any other athletic program in the country. It’s also the most successful athletic program in the country. UT has won the Directors Cup for top athletic program in the country four of the last six years.

Beyond the classroom and the athletic department, John has taught this methodology to entrepreneurs in a one-on-one coaching environment — backed by a money-back guarantee to double their income within a year. The one requirement: netting a minimum of $200,000 annually at the start of coaching. The results were stunning. And video testimonials from those entrepreneurs are available.

He is the author of Advanced Leadership of Self: The Science of Leveraging Yourself — the defining text of this emerging discipline, available to anyone, anywhere in the world, who is driven to apply the full methodology to their own life.

He is the host of The Missing Secret — a weekly podcast bringing the Advanced Leadership of Self methodology to a growing global audience and establishing its place in the broader conversation about human performance and potential.

And lastly, John is the convener of the first worldwide Advanced Leadership of Self Summit — taking place in November 2027 in Austin, Texas — the annual gathering of the people building, teaching, researching, and applying the discipline of Advanced Leadership of Self.

The Validation

Before the methodology was ever taught at a university, John sought independent expert validation from the best in the world.

He spent three days one-on-one with Darren Hardy — the former publisher of Success Magazine and recognized by many as the foremost authority in the world on success — walking him through the 12-minute daily Advanced Leadership of Self methodology.

Hardy’s response was unambiguous.

“John, this is excellent.”

But he followed it with a warning.

“You have a problem. I’ve been in the success business for over 25 years. For most people — 98% of people — more success is merely a preference. Merely a preference. And they won’t spend 12 minutes a day on anything to increase their success in life. That’s the dirty little secret of the success and human achievement field.”

His advice: don’t try to reach everyone. Reach the 2%. The people for whom more success is an absolute necessity, not merely a preference.

“Those people will love what you have. It’s a practical, intelligent way to lead themselves. Something sorely missing in the success and human achievement field.”

That validation — from the foremost authority in the success field, before any institutional involvement — confirmed what John already knew: the methodology was not developed to fit an academic framework. It was developed because it works. The academic framework came later, as the vehicle for verifying, measuring, and scaling what was already well proven.

The Philosophy

John Mitchell’s work is built on a simple but profound conviction: that the gap between where most people are and what they are fully capable of is not a gap of intelligence, effort, or ambition. It is a gap of system.

The majority of a person’s daily thoughts and actions — up to 95% — are unconscious. Running on autopilot. Beyond the reach of even the most driven, capable person. And most people spend their entire lives never addressing that layer of their behavior — not because they don’t want to, but because no one has ever given them a practical, proven system for doing it.

That system now exists. It takes 12 minutes a day. It is grounded in neuroscience. It is measured with rigor. And it works.

John will be the first to acknowledge his bias. He created this methodology. But he will also ask the question he cannot stop asking: what could be a better morning routine than feeding the succinct articulation of your desired life to yourself each day? Twelve minutes. Every day. He has yet to find a satisfying answer. And neither, it turns out, have his students.

John Mitchell’s life’s work is ensuring that every person who is ready for it can access it.

About The Center

The Center for Advanced Leadership of Self
University of Texas at Austin

The Center for Advanced Leadership of Self is the institutional home of an emerging academic discipline — the science and system of deliberately leading oneself, so that the right actions happen automatically and The Exceptional Life becomes not an aspiration but a natural result.

Established at one of the nation’s premier research universities, the Center exists to do what no other institution in the world is currently doing: build, validate, measure, and scale a complete methodology for addressing the layer of human behavior that determines everything — the 95% of daily thoughts and actions that are unconscious, automatic, and beyond the reach of conscious intention alone.

This is not a center for motivation. It is not a center for inspiration. It is a center for science — grounded in neuroscience, driven by evidence, and committed to results that can be documented, replicated, and scaled.

The Mission

The mission of the Center for Advanced Leadership of Self is threefold:

  1. To establish Advanced Leadership of Self as a recognized academic discipline — with the research, the methodology, the measurement, and the institutional infrastructure that separates a discipline from a philosophy.
  2. To make the methodology available to the broadest possible audience — through courses at UT, through partner institutions, through certification, through corporate training, through the book, and through the Annual Summit.
  3. To produce and publish the evidence that validates the discipline — so that the case for teaching Advanced Leadership of Self is not built on inspiration, but on data.

What the Center Does

Research

The Center drives original research into the science of self-mastery — the neuroscience of unconscious behavior, the mechanisms of autopilot rewiring, the measurement of self-leadership outcomes, and the conditions under which people most effectively develop the ability to lead themselves.

The Leadership of Self Index — the Center’s proprietary measurement instrument — tracks student outcomes with precision across four core dimensions: self-worth, control over daily actions, elimination of the negative inner voice, and mastery of self. The data generated semester after semester at UT forms the growing evidentiary foundation of the discipline.

The Center actively seeks research collaborations with academics and institutions whose work intersects with the science of human performance, unconscious behavior, and self-mastery.

Teaching

The methodology is taught at UT through two courses — Advanced Leadership of Self: The Science of Leveraging Yourself at the MBA level and Design Your Exceptional Life at the undergraduate level — and two workshops: The $5 Million Secret and THINKING — Deep Thinking Two Times a Week.

The Center’s goal is to see this methodology taught broadly across higher education — not as an elective curiosity, but as a core component of what it means to prepare people for life. Conversations are ongoing with additional institutions about bringing Advanced Leadership of Self into their programs.

Certification

A certification program is in development to train and credential educators, coaches, and facilitators in the Advanced Leadership of Self methodology — ensuring that as the discipline grows beyond UT, the integrity of the work grows with it. Certified practitioners will be equipped to teach the methodology with fidelity in their own institutional and organizational contexts.

The Annual Summit

The Advanced Leadership of Self Summit — convened annually by the Center beginning in November 2027 in Austin, Texas — is the primary gathering of the people building, teaching, researching, and applying this discipline. It is the institutional heartbeat of the field — the moment each year when the work being done across classrooms, research centers, corporations, and individual lives comes together in one room.

Corporate & Executive Training

The Center extends its work beyond academia through corporate and executive training programs — bringing the Advanced Leadership of Self methodology into organizations and addressing leadership at its foundation: the relationship each person has with themselves. Because leadership of others ultimately begins with leadership of self.

The Book & Publications

The intellectual foundation of the discipline is being documented and made available to the world. Advanced Leadership of Self: The Science of Leveraging Yourself — the defining text of this emerging discipline — along with John Mitchell’s weekly podcast The Missing Secret, are establishing the methodology’s place in the broader conversation about human performance and potential.

The Founding Story

The Center did not emerge from a grant proposal or an institutional initiative. It emerged from a result.

One person. A 12-minute daily practice. A 25-fold increase in income within four years.

When John Mitchell shared that result with the former Chancellor and President of the University of Texas, the response was immediate: you need to teach this at UT — and let’s teach it together. That conversation led to everything that followed — the courses, the measurement instrument, the research center, and the discipline now being built around them.

The Center is the institutional expression of what began one night shortly after John turned 50. It’s a commitment to take what one person proved was possible and verify, measure, and scale it — until it is available to everyone who is ready for it.
